Its expensive to live. L.a is about a 2 hour drive.. I would pick a place other than downtown to live.. The drive to SF is likely to be around 8 hours (not 5 like someone else was saying). If you'll be driving to LA more than once a week than you should really be living their. There are lots of good places to live in LA. You may want to check Los Feliz and Silverlake. Both are areas that are being gentrified, so there are lots of bars and restaurants and you'll likely feel very comfortable.
